Principal's Message

This year, El Camino Real Science and Technology Academy was fortunate enough to be chosen as a recipient of the TURNAROUND ARTS GRANT. Turnaround Arts is a partnership launched by the White House to help schools develop and implement high quality arts education. The mission of the grant is to garner more academic achievement by infusing education with music, thus creating a more dynamic learning environment. The grant entails El Camino Real to be working with the President’s Committee on the Arts to ensure that the arts are an available avenue to success for our students.

As recipients of the grant, First Lady Michelle Obama invited our Superintendent and I to attend the First Annual White House Talent Show. We, along with the other recipients of the grant, were greeted with a warm reception at the East Wing of the White House. Mrs. Obama spoke about the importance of integrating the arts to facilitate student engagement. We were then treated to a talent show by the initial eight schools that had been selected the previous year. Following the performances, President Barack Obama addressed the audience directly, imploring everyone to continue support for the arts in education.

In accordance with the values of the organization, each school is given a mentor to help guide the infusion of arts in to education. Our school was fortunate enough to receive Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers as our mentor. We look forward to this important collaboration and are eager to begin this musical journey in to a more creative look at learning, especially since creativity and critical thinking is a key element of the new Common Core Standards.

Learn By Doing Lab!

El Camino Real’s 5th grade class students had the unique opportunity to experience real world, standards-based, inquiry-driven science curriculum taught by Cal Poly undergraduates planning careers in teaching. Mrs. Betz, Mrs. Brabant, Mrs. Galleagos, and Ms. Beal’s classes had an exciting, hands-on learning laboratory on the Cal Poly campus. ECR’s 5th grade students visited the Cal Poly campus and were engaged in meaningful science activities that focused on polymers and circuits.
